Dining here was an experience I had been looking forward to! 🤗

From the moment you walk into Hotel 1928, there is so much to take in: every detail feels intentional, thoughtful, beautifully put together—and Bertie’s Rooftop is no exception.

You don’t just come to feed your stomach, you feed your eyes too!

Now, let’s talk about the food!

We started with the biscuits, served with jam and an amazing honey butter. The biscuits were perfectly baked—soft and moist, not dry at all. I didn’t even try the jam because, honestly, the honey butter added so much flavor and made the biscuits absolutely delicious.

We also ordered the beef dumplings, which were another great choice. Even though they were steamed they had this crispy bottom without being greasy. The sauce was incredibly flavorful with a bit of heat, be aware that too much of the sauce can become quite spicy.

For entrees, we ordered the kids pasta with butter sauce and grilled chicken, the ribeye steak and the roasted chicken, along with creamy mashed potatoes and crispy sweet potatoes. One thing that immediately stood out was the portion sizes—even the kid’s meal was very big.

Everything was very well seasoned and full of flavor!

A little note about the photos: I somehow forgot to take a picture of the creamy mashed potatoes 🫣! You can spot them hiding in the corner of the steak photo, though. The portion was great and easily enough for two people to share.

My recommendation for couples or parties of two would be to order one protein and one or more sides to share. The proteins don’t automatically come with sides, so everything is ordered separately, and the portions are large enough.

We were guests at the hotel and had reservations. When we arrived, they told us they were closed for a private event. The hostess argued that someone called to let us know but no one did and we in fact received a confirmation text the day before.

Let's start with the ambiance. It truly bears the signature of the Magnolia team; it's meticulously thought out, elegant, and definitely worth a visit. Next, let's talk about the food. To put it bluntly, it was abysmal. It was consistently oversalted, lukewarm, and didn't live up to the overall ambiance at all. Okay, and then there's the staff/service. As we all know, everything hinges on that. Unfortunately, we had the misfortune of being served by a completely disinterested employee. She could hear, but she didn't listen. Clearing plates without being asked is simply unacceptable. And then, the dismissal. After we finished our main course, we knew we wouldn't be having dessert. So, after being asked if we wanted anything else (dessert or coffee) and declining, she immediately asked if we wanted to pay together or separately. Thirty seconds later, the bill was on the table. What a shame, a real shame!

From start to finish, this spot was terrific. The shrimp cocktail was huge (8 pieces) which you don't typically get in a shrimp cocktail. The seabass I had was lovely - I was able to sub out the kimchi in my dish (not a fan) for wilted spinach and so much on the menu was gluten free which I 100% appreciate. Also, they brought a special dessert from their cafe downstairs just so I could have a GF Dessert option other than ice cream. But to me, most importantly, our server was delightful and attentive without being in your face (young blond gentleman). As a business owner, I appreciate great customer service!!! Thanks Bertie's for a great evening!!

The crab cakes were really good and the staff was very friendly. The atmosphere was not for me a didn't feel nostalgic, and seemed a little drab for my taste. It might have been better if we were able to have sat outside. We left after a drink and the crab cakes.

A little pricey but for a special occasion or date night, this place is great! Beautiful decor, amazing views of downtown Waco and wonderful service. We also loved everything we ordered. We will be back!

The atmosphere was great, but the food was honestly disappointing. Service was friendly, but slow in all areas from drinks to food and later, dishes. It was well over an hour to get our food which was ordered at the same time as apps.

We ordered the rooftop ceasar salad and spinach artichoke dip for appetizers. Would not recommend either, lacking flavor—the spinach artichoke dip was runny and especially bland, although the homemade chips were good. Was almost more like a soup with full spinach leaves in it.

I ordered the ribeye, which again, was disappointing at the price point. Honestly struck me as a $25 steak from a local diner, marked up to $60. The salmon was good but very small portion. Lobster mac & cheese side was probably the best thing we ate all night, large chunks of lobster and decent flavor, although still just a bit bland.

I really wanted to love this place, but my birthday girl and I both felt the same way after leaving, the food just wasn’t even close to matching the atmosphere and price.

Recently opened in a newly reimagined building, it is a downtown treasure. The feeling is intimate and nostalgic - fulfilling the dreamed intention.

I recommend that you take your time when you visit. Bring your cell phone but only for pictures. Step out of the 21st century and be transported to the time your great grandparents were courting.

Allow yourself to revel in a time of elegance and enjoy each other's company.

Wife and I took her sister and husband out for sister’s birthday. Rooftop bar area was very nice with great easterly view of the ALICO bldg, courthouse, etc. It was a little cool so we ate inside. Service was adequate, but a little rough. Only reason it got 4 instead of 3 stars was the mgr delivered our soup and appetizers and comped them, apologizing for the wait which honestly seemed totally fine. Speaking of appetizers- the crispy sweet potatoes were fantastic! I swear they had a hint of marshmallow-over-the-campfire to them. I had the 44 Farms filet which was excellent. Took just a minute to appreciate the chimichuri.

Overall a nice evening. For me, the atmosphere would’ve been nicer had it not been so brightly lit up. Several other nice areas in the hotel as well.

Such a great restaurant! We came for dinner on my bachelorette trip and it was amazing. We went on a Friday night at 7:30 and I will say that it was a little bit quieter than I was expecting, but not a bad thing! They weren’t busy at all.

AMAZING service! The manager was so kind and came to talk to our table. We all got different things and everyone loved their meals!!

I think this would be the perfect spot for a date night.

While nice and social the bartenders are not trained. For a bar this nice and price point the bartenders should know terminology like “up” or “built”. The bar across the street has better drinks and bartenders.

This place is so overrated. The food is average. We both had the filet, and it was flavorless. The service is slow and terrible. It was not even busy when we were up there. The bar is woefully small, and the bartender is not good. I paid 20 bucks for a very below average old fashioned. Spend your money elsewhere.

The views were great and the food was delicious. The atmosphere was cozy.

Service could have been better. We ordered appetizers and they took long to get us small plates for them. They also forgot an entree for one of us in the party and had to rush the order.

We were in town and saw the rooftop and thought how fun that would be for dinner. Little did we know the service from the entire staff would be excellent. Gabby is a beautiful person and brings her passion to please, her ability and explain different dishes and what to expect is genuine. We had fun with some signature cocktails, views from the rooftop and laughs in the restaurant. The theme from the roaring 30's is perfect. To be able to model and create the feel is magical. I want to dress in the era and come back. Fantastic evening. Thanks to the entire staff for a job well done.

The views and vibes are really what Bertie’s is all about. The food is well done but the menu is not super exciting. Service is still being figured out.

If you’re staying at the hotel it’s great for a standard night out (though Waco has lots of more exciting food options to offer). Locals this is worth it at least once for the experience. Would be cool to see them get a more unique chef / menu.

We got the mushroom risotto and the sea bass. Our waiter suggested adding crispy pancetta to the risotto and it definitely took it up a notch. The sauce on the sea bass was very tasty.

Brunch was a similar experience. My chicken biscuit with fries was good. Drinks are fine enough.

We definitely loved Bertie’s! Something to be aware of that may not be clear from the name is that the restaurant itself is indoor (top floor of the hotel), but there is an outdoor lounge area with a bar and fire pits with a view of the city that you can sit at before/after dinner. We got the Cowboy Caviar as an appetizer and it was fantastic - definitely coming back just for that! I got the salmon which was also delicious, and the Brussels sprouts it came with had an amazing sauce. My husband got the chicken and it was good, but not incredible. Our cocktails were delicious - not sure the names but their version of a French 75 and a bananas foster type drink. With the outdoor lounge area and the other areas throughout the hotel we will definitely be back both for dinner and enjoying the space!

    What a beautiful place!
Everything we ordered was top notch, from the drinks to the desserts!
Bertie's has an avocado and apple cocktail that is a fantastic surprise.
We ordered the salmon, and the risotto and both were seasoned perfectly.
Our waitress Jeannie is divine! She made us feel at home and made sure that none of the dishes conflicted with my oh so annoying food allergies.
The only negatives I have are the restaurant can get a bit loud as there is very little to dampen sound (we had a table next to us at the beginning with a person whose voice could cut glass and were so happy when they left) and there was only one bathroom for the restaurant that I could find, and there was ALWAYS a line to it.
Overall my husband and I loved Bertie's.

First off, it's worth noting that you're not dining outside on the rooftop (slightly misleading name, but it's because they built an enclosed dining room on the roof). You CAN step outside from the dining area and be out on the rooftop lounge area / bar.

The service was fantastic. I had made a reservation online and checked a box to indicate it was to celebrate our anniversary. Upon arriving and checking in, the hostess congratulated us on our anniversary. She showed us to our table, and then our waitress came over and congratulated us. That alone felt special, but truly the whole night was awesome. Staff were very attentive, helpful, and knowledgeable.

Food was delicious, see pictures. We had the Texas Salsa, which is less of a traditional salsa and more of a "cowboy caviar" (just a wonderful selection of fresh things minced up and mixed). We also had the Chicken Paillard and the Cheesiest Cheeseburger for main entrees.

Atmosphere was classy and detailed, yet relaxing. Joanna & Chip Gaines really outdid themselves on this project. Waco really needed something like this!
